love is a verb

This project is an intervention that functions as a public call for remembering that love is not a holiday gift.  As a critical response to the marketability of “love” as something from which to profit monetarily,  individual letters have been cut from old love notes and repurposed to spell out the first stanza of Aretha Franklinʼs version of Otis Redding’s original song, R-E-S-P-E-C-T.  In honor of Franklinʼs recording date, February 14, 1967, 67 cards were publicly dispersed into various card racks in cities across the United States the week prior to Valentineʼs Day 2012.  The lyrics are displayed on the front of each card, and are accompanied by correlating text on their interiors.
